Wir hatten keinen leichten Start ins Leben. Die entbehrungsreichen Kriegs- und Nachkriegsjahre prägten unsere Kindheit. Dennoch erinnern sich die meisten an eine glückliche Kindheit in der Doppelstadt Mönchengladbach mit ihren vielen Möglichkeiten zum Spielen. Sonntags waren wir mit unseren Elter im Volksgarten unterwegs. Die Jungen bastelten sich Zwillen, Pfeil und Bogen und alles was sich sonst noch aus den Trümmern herstellen ließ und die Mädchen spielten mit Knickern. Die Kinder bekamen große Augen, wenn sie die großen, runden Gläser, gefüllt mit "Klömckes" erblickten. Als wir älter wurden, besuchten wir das Kino in der Bahnhofstraße und gingen an heißen Sommertagen zum Schwimmen ins Volksbad oder in den Bellermühle Park. Der Schlussball bei Faust war schon damals legendär und wir schwoften im Kabuff, dem Bügeleisen oder dem Club OK. Wir sahen hoffnungsvoll in die Zukunft!
